Torino, 28 agosto 2020.

After 238 days of hunger strike, the Turkish lawyer Ebru Timtik died. She was arrested along with several other colleagues for her involvement in the defence of civil rights in Turkey.

On 14 August, the Turkish Constitutional Court rejected the request for her and Mr. AytaC Unsal, both on hunger strike, to be released as a precautionary measure, despite the fact that their health was  already very critical. For the Court “there would have been no information or evidence available on the emergence of a critical danger to their Lives or their moral and material integrity”.

And today we learn this dramatic news.

We must continue to fight and support our Turkish colleagues and colleagues from all over the world who risk their lives on a daily basis just because they are lawyers and protect the rights of their patients: because when you want to restrict these rights, the first figure to be affected is that of those who have the social function of defending them, the lawyer.

Ebru was a fierce fighter and today we mourn her, after joining in the numerous appeals for her release.

May his not have been a useless sacrifice and because those who have the for institutional relations in the justice sector also with these countries make their vibrant protest and deep indignation  felt.
